Earn Extra Money: Save on Rental Cars

Since car rental rates can vary greatly, compare total price (including taxes and surcharge) and take advantage of any special offers and membership discounts.

Watch out for taxes. I've been in places where taxes ran me over 17%!!

Rental car companies offer various insurance and waiver options. Check with your automobile insurance agent and credit card company in advance to avoid duplicating any coverage you may already have.

Ask your insurance company if they cover "loss of use." They probably don't, and that's where the car rental company will definitely get you if something were to happen.

1. Compare low-cost carriers with major carriers that fly to your destination. Remember, the best fares may not be out of the airport closest to you.

Usually the bigger airports are cheaper, but not always. Municipalities often subsidize smaller airports so that they are more affordable. Don't always assume that bigger means better.

2. You may save by including a Saturday evening stay-over or by purchasing the ticket at least 14 days in advance. Ask which days of the week and times of the day have the lowest fare.

This isn't generally the case anymore. However, purchasing a ticket 14-28 days in advance is usually when you'll get the best deal.

3. Even if you are using a travel agent, check airline and Internet travel sites, and look for special deals. If you call, always ask for the lowest fare to your destination.

Calling will often go far...very far.

Remember, a penny saved is a penny earned. There are lots of great ways out there to earn extra money, including trying to save a little.
